Meet CF7 Oystercatcher
Meet CF7, the first bird we captured on Cape Lookout National Seashore. This bird was paired with an unbanded mate, so we don’t know anything about her previous history, or that of her mate. Sadly, CF7 and her mate lost their first nest and had to try a second time with a new clutch of eggs. That was lost too. Predation by a raccoon was the most likely cause, as they are abundant on the island and love to eat birds’ eggs. Feral cats also pose a threat. Despite the dangers, CF7 is likely to return next year to try again and in the meantime she was spotted wintering in South Carolina, not by biologists, but by an observant birdwatcher!
