This week a familiar face is back at Lea-Hutaff Island. While on her regular weekly survey of Rich Inlet, biological technician Tara McIver found that Orange Green had returned to his territory. We hadn’t seen him since October 9, when he was roosting on a sandbar with Black Skimmers and other oystercatchers.
Where Orange Green wintered is a mystery because he dropped his transmitter before migrating, but it’s good to have him back on the island. And, he’s already paired up with an unbanded mate. The two of them are piping together, spending time on the same territory they occupied last year, and getting ready to raise chicks this summer.
